Project Details
In the automotive manufacturing industry, efficient automation is critical to maintaining production speed and accuracy. Large scale assembly plants rely on Electrified Monorail Systems to transport components throughout the facility, reducing manual handling and improving workflow.
FSL Electronics was approached by General Motors to provide a highly reliable wireless control solution for EMS conveyor systems operating within a production environment subject to strict radio frequency restrictions.
The Problem
General Motors required a wireless remote control system that could:
• Operate within strict radio frequency regulations
• Prevent signal interference between multiple EMS units operating simultaneously
• Deliver continuous and reliable performance with no communication failures
• Maintain operator safety with controlled system activation
Conventional RF based remote control systems were not suitable due to interference risks and regulatory constraints within the plant.
The Challenge
FSL Electronics were tasked with designing a bespoke wireless control solution for EMS conveyor systems that could operate reliably in a radio restricted, high density automation environment while ensuring operator safety and ease of use.
The Solution
FSL developed a custom Ultrabeam® Infrared Wireless Remote Control System that:
✔ Utilised infrared communication technology to eliminate RF interference
✔ Allowed multiple EMS systems to operate simultaneously without cross interference
✔ Enabled zone based control to prevent signal overlap
✔ Required line of sight operation to enhance operator safety
✔ Was custom engineered in collaboration with the system integrator to match exact EMS functions
